Webmaster's Report Fall 2022

I have created a section on the website for the Webmaster's Report as a section of the Meeting Minutes page. You can read the full report there and I will only present a summary of the report at the meeting. This should reduce the time spent on the report during old business.

John Lord has been conducting a number of workshops over the summer and he has been sending me photos of these for the website. I have automated the process of producing a slideshow of event photos to make it easier to post them. These pages are available by going to the Meeting Schedule page, which lists the workshows by date with a link to Event Photos for each.

The process of automating the Event Photos slideshows was so successful that I decided to also automate the newsletter production process. Over the years a hodge-podge of different methods for displaying issues of the newsletter have evolved. I decided to unify this to a single method. I decided on displaying the newsletter pages in a slideshow format similar to the one used for events. Now all newsletters back to 1999 are displayed in a consistent format.

The process of obtaining GPS coordinates from photos is ongoing. I have modified my geographic coordinates utility program to read the coordinates directly from an image file. All of the photos John takes during his workshops contain GPS data, so we now have accurate GPS coordinates for the cemeteries where he has conducted events.

Because of the potential security risk of having GPS data in photos some phone apps redact the information before emailing them. Sue Hunt sent me some photos with GPS info but the coordinates came through redacted. We were able to determine that it was the app that was changing the files. I have not been able to find a simple workaround.

Updates to the site information is processed as it comes in. Franklin, Tilton and Sanbornton information had several problems that got resolved. There were five sites in Sanbornton that were listed as being in Tilton in the Sanbornton database. The result was they were not listed in either town. The have now been added. Back when Louise Tallman was maintaining the database an unknown person sent her considerable misinformation on several Franklin sites. This issue has now been fixed.
